Module summary

This module is offered as a discovery module and it is for students who have no previous knowledge of Portuguese. The aim of this module is to take students from total beginners to about an A1 level of the CEFR The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing confidence and a degree of accuracy when using the language in a limited range of social situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in Brazil and Portugal and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Portuguese-speaking countries societies and cultures.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to the Portuguese language and gradually develop their ability to function at beginners' level in a variety of everyday contexts. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level. They should also develop an awareness of the culture of Portugal and Brazil but also the other six Portuguese speaking countries.

Learning outcomes


Students will gain knowledge on Portuguese language at the A2 level of the CEFR. On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- understand and make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker;
- demonstrate some awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Portuguese and English;
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar.

Skills outcomes

Knowledge of the major present and past tenses of Portuguese; ability to read basic texts in Portuguese with a general understanding of their contents; ability to converse at a basic level in Portuguese.

Syllabus

This module, intended for ab initio students of Portuguese, will:
a) cover the basic grammar rules of Portuguese, including the use of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs in the simple present, present continuous, simple past and future.
b) introduce students to reading an elementary text in Portuguese
c) give practice in Portuguese conversation in everyday and some professional situations
d) give practice in the comprehension of elementary spoken Portuguese.

Private study

Guided independent study each week including review of the lesson, self-study and homework tasks; preparation and practice for the exams:
- 20 hours: Independent online learning
- 60 hours: Coursework preparation
- 40 hours: Grammar reinforcement
- 40 hours: Examination revision.

The resit for any written component of this module, will take the form of a 1 hour exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a 10 minute oral exam .
